My Favourite Oils for the Face

I’ve been spending time researching oils that look after our facial skin helping to keep it healthy, nourished and as youthful as possible.

I’m creating my own blend of facial elixirs to use in my treatments as well as adding to my Quiescent botanical product range.

There is a whole other ‘oily’ world out there other than essential oils that contain a rich supply of vitamins and essential fatty acids that are needed for our skin to stay healthy and hydrated.

These oils (aka carrier oils) consist of nourishing nut, seed, fruit and plant oils, each having their own unique therapeutic goodness that supports our skin, keeping it healthy, soft and supple.

It’s pretty impressive what these beautiful oils offer our skin and I’ve definitely decided upon a few favourites.

Oils for the Face

So, I thought I’d share my top 5 with you and why.

BORAGE OIL (Borago officinalis)

Skin Healing

This oil comes from the seed of the Borage plant and it’s LOADED with gamma linolenic acid an Omega-6 fatty acid. This omega plays an important role in the structural integrity and barrier function of your skin. It contains very effective anti-inflammatory properties, its incredibly soothing, very hydrating and helps in preventing the signs of our skin’s ageing. A wonderful oil for healing and maintaining normal skin function and keeping your skin healthy.

Borage oil suits all skin types but especially dry and sensitive skins. It’s a perfect oil to include in a facial blend over winter to protect and look after your skin.

JOJOBA (Simmondsia chinensis)

Skin Balancing

Ok, did you know Jojoba is not actually an oil but a wax? It is very high in wax ester and Vitamin E and also contains myristic acid making it a great anti-inflammatory.

Its strength is being able to support your skin’s oil and pH balance because it closely resembles your own skin’s oil (sebum). This makes sebum less likely to build up on your skin and clog your pores, leading to fewer breakouts and less severe acne.

There is evidence that Jojoba absorbs very easily into the skin, delivering hydration and moisturising. Jojoba contains natural forms of vitamin E. This vitamin works with your skin as an antioxidant. This means that jojoba can help your skin fight oxidative stress caused by everyday exposure to pollutants and other toxins.

Jojoba also contains antibacterial properties making it a great oil to use if you have oily skin and are prone to break outs.

This balancing and regenerative oil is useful for both oily and dry skin conditions.

AVOCADO OIL (Persea americana)

Skin Nourishing

I love, love, love this oil. The colour and consistency of this oil oozes skin nourishing goodness.

Avocado oil has a high skin penetrating ability and is extremely healing, soothing and revitalising. It will soothe skin inflammation, boost collagen production and help prevent premature ageing (yay!). It brings a suppleness to post-menopausal skin and is rich in Vitamins A, B1, B2, D and lecithin. Its a very nourishing oil for the skin and is full of protein, fat and antioxidants.

A hydrating, nourishing oil perfect for sensitive, sun-damaged, dry and mature skin.

MARULA OIL (Scelerocarya birrea)

Skin Miracle

Marula oil is a natural, highly nutritious and very light textured oil that is cold-pressed from the Marula fruit’s seed kernels.

It contains powerful antioxidants, essential fatty acids and is rich in oleic acid (Omega-9).  Also a great source of Vitamin C a powerhouse ingredient for your skin, helping to protect it from environmental stressors, firm and tighten, as well as brighten your skin.

This light oil quickly absorbs leaving the skin silky, hydrated and nourished.

Marula is beneficial for dry, sensitive, inflamed and sun damaged skin and is ideal for under-nourished, dull, aging skin.

KAKADU PLUM OIL (Terminalia ferdinandiana)

Skin Powerhouse

This special oil from Australia’s Kakadu Plum is rich in Omega-6, has very high levels of Vitamin C and is loaded with antioxidants. It is a very effective anti-ageing oil and the antioxidants protect your skin from the harmful effects of free radicals and oxidative stress. The high levels of Vitamin C in Kakadu Plum oil boosts collagen which helps to retain skin’s elasticity and firmness.

A gorgeous oil that gives your skin a natural glow, supports smooth supple skin, stimulates production of collagen and evens the complexion by fading dark spots and acne scars.

This wonderful oil benefits all skin types.

POMEGRANATE SEED OIL (Punica granatum L.)

Skin Rejuvenator

This rejuvenating oil is unique with its extremely high level of punicic acid (78%). This acid has been called a “super CLA” (conjugated linoleic acid). CLA helps skin retain moisture by boosting ceramide synthesis in skin cells; this fortifies the skin barrier and helps to retain moisture in the skin.

Pomegranate seed oil penetrates easily and deeply to create lasting, healthy moisture that won’t feel greasy or create shininess. It contains anti-inflammatory properties and supports collagen and elasticin production.

This is a wonderful rejuvenating oil for very dry and mature skin.

Oils for the Face

I’m in love with all of these and more.

I treasure that all this skin goodness is available to us from nature.  I place huge importance in making sure I source oils from a reputable supplier and they’ve been sourced ethically and sustainably.  My aim is to never take from the earth and not return the favour or put back in some way.

Is there an oil that’s your absolute favourite?

Let me know, I’d love to hear!

A quick tip to boost your skin’s moisture level when using a facial oil …

I’ve found the combination of gently misting my face with a botanical hydrosol e.g. lavender (which is calming, cooling and healing) after cleansing, then applying a botanical facial oil straight away really helpful. Doing this aids the oil to spread smoothly and evenly, and the hydrating goodness of the botanical water is captured and sealed in creating a dewy, youthful glow 😊.

Skin goodness supplied by nature 😊 xo
