Aroma Self Care in Winter – Body Scrub
If you’re anything like me, winter makes me want to hibernate.
The evening draws in early, the sound of the rain on the roof, and winds whistling around the house makes me want to cuddle up keeping warm inside.
Some days I don’t mind. In fact, I am grateful for it.
Winter allows me to rest more instead of being busy and filling my day up to the brim. I tend not to feel so guilty when relaxing on the couch reading a good book or bingeing the latest Netflix obsession (Line of Duty any one?) if it’s wet and miserable outside.
Life is busy and I enjoy quiet time at home recharging and resting.
Winter can also allow us to look after ourselves a little more.
Unfortunately, this quieter time may also mean less physical activity and motivation. Not so much time spent outside in the sunshine and fresh air. Plus, colds and flu always seem to be doing the rounds … again.
This makes winter an ideal time to start creating little nurturing habits that can become part of your daily or weekly routine. Prioritising time for yourself and self-care, no matter how small, makes such a positive difference to how you feel and cope with a busy life.
This is where aromatherapy can play a special part in your health and wellness plan.
The power and effectiveness of essential oils are not to be underestimated. They are helpful on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. There’s something reassuring, grounding and healing about utilising the essence of nature to nurture ourselves without using synthetics.
Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils is so much more than just a smell.
Each essential oil has its very own individual effective chemical makeup of therapeutic properties that can affect us on a physiological level. This relates back to the plant or origin of where the essential oil has come from. Nature truly is very special.
I have found (unfortunately the hard way), that it is really important for me to make the time to rest and look after myself so I can keep doing what I love.
With being a qualified aromatherapist I LOVE using the power of plants, their aroma and my aroma knowledge to find ways to keep myself in balance. I enjoy experimenting and trialling different recipes and oils to find simple and wonderful ways to nurture and support myself using aromatherapy.
I’ve created some firm favourites that I use and over the next couple of journal posts I will share them with you so you can try them too.
One of my favourites is using an Aroma Body Scrub which is really easy to make and use.
Massaging this natural body scrub over my legs and arms in the shower is a refreshing way to wake up and start the day.
Aroma Body Scrub
Sometimes the body can feel quite stagnant over the colder months.
Using a body scrub is a wonderful way to stimulate the blood and lymphatic circulation, remove dead skin cells and liven up the senses.
I have been experimenting with a natural body scrub recipe which I’ve altered a little to suit me and the winter months.
The moisturising and healing oils in this body scrub leave your skin feeling so soft and nourished. It is gorgeous!
There is no need to use a body moisturiser afterwards. Your skin will be hydrated and protected.
Depending on the essential oils you choose the properties of the oils will bring their own special magic to the scrub providing both physical and emotional benefits.
I ADORE this recipe! You won’t go back to buying a body scrub again. It’s really simple to make and I love that it contains no synthetics, no nasties and you can totally eliminate the use of plastic.
Below is the base list of ingredients for the Aroma Body Scrub. Then to follow I’ve given a few options of essential oil blends that you may like to try.
I’ve used calendula infused oil in my scrub because I love its skin healing and soothing properties. But if you don’t have calendula infused oil you can replace with sweet almond oil which is just as lovely and very moisturising.
- 20 ml coconut oil (gently melted first)
- 5 ml calendula infused oil or sweet almond oil
- 26 gm coconut sugar or raw organic sugar
- 9 gm course sea salt or Epsom salts
- 6 drops (in total) of your chosen essential oil blend.
Mix the oils, sugar and salt in a medium glass or ceramic bowl. Gently blend in the essential oils using a glass rod, spatula or wooden spoon.
Store in a glass jar with a tight lid. Make sure you label the jar and store in a secure cupboard away from children and pets.
A little goes a long way and this recipe gives just over ¼ cup Aroma Body Scrub but you can double the recipe if you would like to make more.
A wee note: In the cooler temperatures the Aroma Body Scrub will harden slightly due to the nature of coconut oil. However, with the addition of calendula infused oil or sweet almond oil, it is still very easy to scoop a little out to use.
